EndOclear Study

The goal of this study is to evaluate the clinical benefits of the endOclear device in keeping endotracheal tubes (ETT) free from secretions and bacterial colonization from the moment of the intubation. The study hypothesizes that the routine use of endOclear from the time of intubation (time 0) in patients expected to remain intubated for more than 48 hours with a standard ETT could be more effective than the standard suctioning alone to maintain ETT lumen patency, reducing ETT colonization and biofilm formation.

Services provided: Microbiologic analyses assessed materials from the extubated endotracheal tubes. Samples were plated to standard media for work-up of respiratory specimens. Plates were read by MHMC Clinical Microbiologists who provided an overall biomass in CFU/mL and speciated potential bacterial and fungal pathogens. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of spectated isolates further identified potential drug-resistant strains.
